Registration

While copyright rights are generated upon the production of the creative work, they must be registered in order to sue for damages occurring from infringement.

Requirements

In order for a work to be copyrighted, it must be fixed in a tangible medium of expression, no matter how briefly, such as canvas, film, or computer data. Also, the work must be original and creative, though the degree of originality and creativity is minimal. For example, merely identifying when to snap a photo is sufficient to create copyright ownership in a picture.

Limitations

There are limits to copyrights. They have a lifespan set to the life of the author and an additional seventy years afterward. They are also curbed by the Doctrine of Fair Use, which permits others to use portions of the copyrighted work for news, commentary, and review.
